Opened in 1965, Don Camillo is Hobart’s oldest restaurant, and it’s a rare local who hasn’t fond memories of dining there. Bentwood chairs, close-set tables topped with oil lanterns, and the pleasant hum of diners’ chatter extend a warm welcome as do attentive, knowledgeable staff. This family run business is now in the hands of the second generation, and though they’ve brought a fresh take to the classic Italian menu, they certainly haven’t forgotten Don Camillo’s long tradition of quality and consistency in service and food. House made potato gnocchi might come tossed through a rich lamb shank ragu braised with red wine, tomato and porcini mushroom – even better with a matching local or Italian wine.
